One of the aims of the Civil Rights Struggle in the Shoals Project is to include our community story into state and national narratives of the civil rights movement. Just as every schoolchild learns about Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus boycott, our hope is that they would know about Wendell Wilkie Gunn and Burrell Slater. To that end, local educators from Florence City Schools and the University of North Alabama have developed sample lesson plans based on the archival materials in the website suitable for a variety of grades. Feel free to make use of these, and let us know if you’d like to contribute a civil rights lesson plan.
